December is a month that invites us to embrace the spirit of giving—whether it’s giving of our time, talents, or treasures to help those in need. This week, my family and I focused on giving our time to make the season brighter for others.
For 14 years, our family has kept a cherished tradition alive: ringing the bells for the Salvation Army each Christmas season. Sometimes the whole gang joins in—including our little Shih Tzu, Boomer, who once donned his own festive gear to help spread the cheer! Other years, it’s been just a few of us braving the weather.
And oh, the weather—we’ve experienced everything from sunny days that felt like a gift, to freezing temperatures so harsh that kind strangers handed us Starbucks gift cards (a sure sign they thought we could use some extra warmth!). No matter the forecast, we show up with Christmas music playing, Santa hats on our heads, and smiles ready to greet everyone with a hearty “Merry Christmas!”
While the Red Kettle fills with donations to support the Salvation Army’s incredible work, something magical happens every year. Someone always shares a story about how the Salvation Army saved their, or a loved one’s, life. Other times, it’s a heartfelt thank-you, a cherished memory, or an unexpected act of kindness. These moments remind us why we ring the bells—they leave us feeling deeply blessed and grateful to be part of something so meaningful.
This year, I’ve also been giving in a way that ties closely to my passion: sharing the gift of stories. I donated copies of my children’s book to Little Free Libraries, my church, and neighborhood caroling parties. There’s something wonderful about knowing a book can spark joy, ignite imaginations, and spread holiday cheer—one story at a time.
As the month of December wraps up, let’s remember that giving isn’t just about what’s in our wallets; it’s about offering a piece of ourselves. Whether it’s volunteering your time, sharing your unique talents, or donating to a cause close to your heart, every act of generosity makes the season brighter for someone else.
Warm Regards,
~Wendy
